Pediatric Surgery

The paediatric surgery department at KIMS provides surgical care for children up to the age of 18. Paediatric surgery is generally divided into the general surgery of childhood, and specialised paediatric surgery. Both services are provided by the department, at KIMS. KIMS is the regional center of excellence for emergency surgical conditions in children. It has a paediatric intensive care unit, and a full range of tertiary specialties such as cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, interventional radiology all under one roof. This means that when a child is seriously unwell and needs an urgent operation, all the expertise required for a successful outcome is available immediately in one place. General surgery is usually carried out in a daycase setting allowing children to be discharged from hospital on the same day after a minor procedure. Examples of conditions the team sees are "lumps and bumps", hernias, hydroceles, circumscision and tongue ties.
