CANCER RELAPSE: SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR

Friday, November 8, 2019

WHAT IS CANCER RELAPSE?

A relapse occurs when the cancer comes back after treatment. This can happen weeks, months, or even many years after the primary or original cancer was treated. It is impossible for your doctor to know for sure if the cancer will recur. The chance of recurrence depends on the type of the primary cancer. Your doctor can give you more information about your risk of having a recurrence.

WHY AND HOW CANCER RECURS?

Cancer recurs because small areas of cancer cells can remain in the body after treatment. Over time, these cells may multiply and grow large enough to cause symptoms or for tests to identify them.

When and where a cancer recurs depends on the type of cancer. Some cancers have an expected pattern of recurrence. A cancer may recur in the following patterns:

  • In the same part of the body as the primary cancer, called a local recurrence
  • Near where the primary cancer was located, called a regional recurrence
  • In another part of the body, called a distant recurrence

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF CANCER RELAPSE?

Knowing the general symptoms of cancer is a great way to help you detect a cancer relapse early. The earlier a relapse is diagnosed, the more likely it can be successfully treated. In some cases, second cancers cannot be prevented.

Some types of cancer may not present any symptoms. Health care including regular check-ups and screenings can help detect problems early. Screening may include blood tests and imaging such as X-rays, CT scans and PET scans.

Relapse symptoms include:

  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits.
  • A sore that does not heal.
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge.
  • Thickening or lump in the breast or other parts of your body.
  • Indigestion or difficulty swallowing.
  • Noticeable change in a wart or mole.
  • Nagging cough or hoarseness.
  • Fatigue.
  • Bone pain.
  • Changes in vision.
  • Constant or severe headaches.

Having some of these symptoms doesn't mean you have cancer. However, it's best to talk with your doctor if you notice these or other symptoms. Also, talking with your doctor about concerns you have about second cancers may help relieve some of the anxiety that you might have.

HOW TO MINIMIZE THE RISK OF CANCER RELAPSE?

One of the most important things you can do is to follow-up with a health care team that is well- informed about survivorship care. Good medical care and screening can help detect second cancers early.

Some other ways are:

  • Try to find balance with a healthy lifestyle.
  • Know if your family has a history of cancer.
  • Use a health journal to prepare for your next visit with your doctor.
