PREPARING FOR END OF LIFE

Dr. E. A. Varalakshmi, Friday, November 8, 2019

Parkinson’s disease is consummating. The best hospitals for Parkinson’s disease in India or abroad cannot cure the patient except for improving his symptoms. The research so far conducted has not helped in checking the disease at an earlier stage or later. When diagnosed with the disease, he comes to terms with the disease that it’s going to be a lifelong condition. What bothers or scares him is to cope with the disease as it progresses with more complications and eventually death.

Thinking about the End of Life :

Not everyone can be mentally capable of taking a decision about the future prospects of his life as the disease advances. Hence, it’s advisable to make your loved one’s know about the condition and its severity. Also, how things have to be taken further when he becomes incapacitated whether it’s with regard to the further care he may want to have, or financial and other affairs or any sort of help or support him may want to discuss.

Plan your Future Now:

Planning your future saves the responsibility of your loved ones to take a decision on your behalf and also they would be fulfilling your wishes even after your death. This saves him from being morally obligated to take a decision himself which may or may not be acceptable to other family members. The things that you have to plan are-

Have a talk with your near and dear ones:

Having a talk about death is not easy. But it has to be done if you want things to be sorted and smooth when your condition has worsened or you have passed away. So let your dear and near ones know what they have to do with you and also let them also know that they will be taken care of.

Speaking to children about this could be very painful but it has to be told and they need to be involved so that they don’t regret of not being known of the circumstances and not being a part of it might weigh heavy on them.

Let them know your wishes:

Discuss with your Parkinson’s disease specialist about the later stages of your life.Let your family members know where you want to spend the last days of your life or if you want any of your family members to be by your side in case they are living abroad. Assign a person to take control on what has to be done after your death. Tell them if you have any religious wishes.

Looking after your affairs:

Keep your important belongings like property papers, credit cards, car keys, passports, mortgage deeds etc. in a safe place and keep your loved ones informed about it.

Make a will:

Here you will choose an executor-one person or more than one person who will take charge of your assets and belongings after your death through a solicitor. You may also write about the way your funeral needs to be conducted.
