Training In India
Internship (House Officer): I worked as house office in a teaching hospital for 12 months. During this period, I rotated through different departments, which include General Medicine, General Surgery, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, E.N.T, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, Chest Medicine, Dermatology and Psychiatry. I did 1 in 5 on – calls.
Post Graduate Training: I worked as S.H.O in Nizam‟s Institute of Medical Sciences, which is one of the top five University hospitals in India. It is a super speciality hospital and research institute. The Cardiology department in this hospital has international repute. The Radiology department in this hospital is recognized by Royal College of Physicians (U.K.). I did 3 ½ years S.H.O rotation in General Medicine in this hospital. During this period I rotated through different departments, which include Rheumatology, Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, Dermatology, Infectious diseases, Oncology and Psychiatry. I also worked in acute medical wards like I.T.U, H.D.U, Acute Neurological Care Unit, C.C.U, and A & E. I did 1 in 4 on-calls (acute unselected take) throughout my rotation. I did two clinics a week. I was actively involved and participated in journal clubs, seminars, grand rounds, clinical meetings, radiology meetings, general medicine-haematology-oncology meetings, bedside clinics and CPCs. I did three clinico pathological conferences (CPC) during my training. I taught bedside clinics to fifth year medical students. I co-ordinated junior doctors on-call rotation for three years.
Training In U.K.
My training in the UK is sponsored by Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. I started my career in the UK as clinical attaché with Dr. M.J. Cushley in Dudley group of hospitals. I did three chest clinics in a week, actively participated in the on-calls and post take ward rounds. I passed MRCP part 1 in July 1996 while I was doing clinical attachment. I also did Cardiology clinics once a week with Dr. J. Flint and occasional attended Neurology and Gastroenterology clinics as a part of my membership preparation.
I worked as S.H.O for nearly 2 ½ years in Dudley Group of Hospitals. During this period I rotated through different departments which include Rheumatology, Cardiology, Chest Medicine, Endocrinology and Geriatrics. I did acute medical on calls (1 in 4 rota). It was three tier structure, HO (GP adm), RMO 1 (admit from AE), RMO 2 (ward work), RMO 3 (CCU), SPR. I did acute medical on-calls (acute unselective take) in all firms except in Rheumatology. I lead the Cardiac arrest team. On on-call days we admitted between 30 and 35 patients a day. I did between two and three clinics a week. Rheumatology on calls involved elective admissions only (selective admissions, quiet take). I actively participated in Journal clubs, Grand rounds, Clinical Audit, Radiology-General Medicine meetings, Radiology –Chest Medicine meetings, Case Presentations and M.R.C.P teaching programmes. I co-ordinated M.R.C.P. teaching rota very efficiently in the Dudley Group of Hospitals.
