Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology, also known as IR, is a medical specialty that employs minimally invasive surgical techniques guided by medical imaging to diagnose, treat, and cure various medical conditions. Medical imaging techniques may include fluoroscopy, MRI, CT, and ultrasound.

The procedures performed by interventional radiologists are designed to be less invasive than traditional surgical procedures, which can mean less pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times for patients. These procedures are often outpatient, and patients can typically return to their normal activities soon after the procedure is completed.

Interventional radiology has become an important part of modern medicine, providing minimally invasive options for diagnosing and treating various conditions. It is often used in conjunction with other medical specialties to provide the best possible care for patients.

Some common procedures performed by interventional radiologists include:

  • Angiography: Using X-rays and contrast dye to examine blood vessels in the body and to identify and treat blockages or narrowing of the vessels.
  • Embolization: A technique used to block blood flow to a specific body area, such as a tumor, by injecting a substance into the blood vessels.
  • Biopsy: Using imaging guidance to take a small tissue sample from a specific body area for further testing.
  • Drainage: Using imaging guidance to place a small tube into a fluid-filled body area, such as the abdomen, to remove the fluid.
  • Thrombolysis: Using medication to dissolve blood clots in the body.
