Heart Transplant

Welcome to the KIMS Heart and Lung Transplant Institute. This is the best place for heart transplant surgery in India. Our team has developed the pioneering basis for solid thoracic organ transplants in India. More than 1,00,000 heart transplants have been performed worldwide to date. Many of these patients have now survived more than 25 years.

Our team led by Dr. Sandeep Attawar has developed many innovations that are now standard practice. Today, the team advances new surgery techniques, develops better anti-rejection medication protocols, and provides the best care for heart transplant patients.

  • We have the latest heart transplantation surgical technique.
  • We employ percutaneous, transvenous heart biopsy to detect rejection.
  • We use new drugs and methods, to treat rejection.
  • Ours is the most successful heart and lung transplant program in India.
  • Our team led by Dr. Attawar performed the first successful mechanical bridge device to heart transplantation (BTT) in India. They have also performed the largest case series, with 8 patients in the Asia-Pacific region, living with the remotely monitored, HA5-Heart assist LVAD device..
  • Dr. Attawar is also has been credited with performing India’s first paediatric Jarvik 2000 LVAD implant in a 12-year-old child with end-stage heart failure, who was not a candidate for a heart transplant. After this, this team under his leadership have performed four Jarvik 2000 implants in young children with end-stage heart failure who were awaiting heart transplants.

On average, we perform 75 heart and lung transplants each year. Our patients are adolescents and adults, and present various types of end-stage heart disease. We stay in touch with patients throughout their lives. We continue to offer support and education as well as medical assistance related to the transplant well after the successful procedure and return home.
