Treatments & Procedures

The Blood and Marrow Transplant program at KIMS is accredited for all components of both allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplants, which include the clinical program and stem cell collection. This accreditation certifies that children's program has passed rigorous standards of practice for all of these facilities.

While BMT is used to treat some cancers, there are a growing number of genetic and metabolic diseases and disorders BMT can treat also. At KIMS, about one third of the patients receiving BMT are being treated for conditions other than cancer.

At KIMS only physicians and nurses with highly specialized training in paediatric BMT treat patients. BMT-trained nurse practitioners remain on the unit around the clock to provide the best care for our patients, day or night. In many rooms, in-room cameras allow caregivers to closely observe patients, especially the smallest and most critical.

Conditions treated include

Bone marrow failure syndromes, Immunodeficiencies, Leukemias, Lymphomas, Lysomal storage disorders, Sickle cell anemia, Solid tumors, Severe aplastic anemia, Severe combined immunodeficiency syndromes (SCIDs), Thalassemia, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome and X-linked immune deficiencies.

Children, adolescents, and young adults surviving childhood cancer have an ongoing need for specialized care and follow-up. At KIMS, cancer care is tailored for children with different survivorship needs. In all the long-term follow up clinics, teams of health care providers focus on improving the quality of life – medical, emotional, educational, and social of the children as they grow into adulthood. Chemotherapy and surgery are also used to treat cancers in children.

Bone Marrow Aspirates

Is when a small amount of bone marrow is removed during a bone marrow aspiration. The procedure is uncomfortable, but can be tolerated by both children and adults. The marrow can be studied to determine the cause of anemia, the presence of leukemia or other malignancy, or the presence of some "storage diseases" in which abnormal metabolic products are stored in certain bone marrow cells and biopsies

Lumbar Puncture

Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) is a clear fluid that circulates in the space surrounding the spinal cord and brain. CSF protects the brain and spinal cord from injury by acting like a liquid cushion. CSF is usually obtained through a lumbar puncture (spinal tap). During the procedure, a needle is inserted usually between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae and the CSF fluid is collected for testing.

Umbilical Cord Blood Transplants

Umbilical cord blood is one source of stem cells. Infusing healthy stem cells into patients is treatment option for those who have undergone high-dose chemotherapy for one of many forms of leukemia, immunodeficiency, lymphoma, anemias, or metabolic disorders. Once the healthy stem cells are infused into the patient's blood stream, the cells move from the blood vessels to the center of the bones, where they begin making new blood cells.
